Flood damaged roads & bridges

 

Rocky Crossing on Barrington West Road

Current situation:

  • Rocky Crossing on Barrington West Road sustained damage during the storms as a result of the March 2022 Natural Disaster.
  • The crossing is currently CLOSED due to this damage.
  • Engineering investigations are being procured to assess the damage and prepare a design solution.
  • Contactor procurement is most likely to occur in 2023 to target restoration by Q3 2023.

Future situation:

Long term strategies to undertake permanent repairs to the crossing will require geotechnical and civil designs, appointment of suitably qualified contractors and then works delivery. This process is currently in progress and is estimated to take anywhere up to 12 months based on environmental controls, and contractor and materials availability.

This work is being undertaken as essential public asset restoration through the provisions of the natural disaster guidelines.

Khatambuhl Creek Bridge on Cundle Flat Road

Current situation:

  • Khatambuhl Creek bridge on Cundle Flat Road sustained significant damage during the storms as a result of the July 2022 Natural Disaster.
  • The Bridge is currently CLOSED due to this damage.
  • Initial Engineering investigations have recommended reconstruction of the eastern abutment. Further Geotechnical investigations have been procured to assess ground conditions and enable preparation of a design solution.
  • Contactor procurement is most likely to occur in 2023 to target restoration by Q3 2023, pending planning and environmental approvals and contractor and materials availability.

Future situation:

Long term strategies to undertake permanent repairs to the bridge will require geotechnical and civil designs, appointment of suitably qualified contractors and then works delivery. This process is currently in progress and is estimated to take anywhere up to 12 months based on contractor and materials availability.

Peter Garratt Bridge on Queens Street, Wingham

Current situation:

  • Peter Garratt bridge on Queens Street, Wingham sustained significant damage during the storms as a result of the July 2022 Natural Disaster.
  • The Bridge is currently OPEN but load restricted due to this damage.
  • An Engineering investigation has been procured and a report is due in the coming weeks.
  • Pending the outcome of the report, further Geotechnical investigations may eb necessary to assess ground conditions and enable preparation of a design solution.
  • Contactor procurement is most likely to occur in 2023 to target restoration by Q3 2023, pending planning and environmental approvals and contractor and materials availability.

Culvert on Bowman Farm Road

Current situation:

  • A culvert on Bowman Farm Road, at Segment 210, sustained significant damage during the storms as a result of the July 2022 Natural Disaster.
  • The Road is OPEN and unrestricted by this damage, but there is no shoulder and restricted width on the road in the location of the damage, so drivers should drive to the conditions.
  • An Engineering investigation has been procured and a report is due in the coming weeks, with directions on a rehabilitation solution.
  • Contactor procurement is most likely to occur in 2023 to target restoration by Q3 2023, pending planning and environmental approvals and contractor and materials availability.

Future situation:

Long term strategies to undertake permanent repairs to the road will require geotechnical and civil designs, appointment of suitably qualified contractors and then works delivery. This process is currently in progress and is estimated to take anywhere up to 12 months based on contractor and materials availability.

Lobban Road, Wingham

Current situation:

  • Lobban Road at The Bight Bridge sustained a severe embankment failure. The Bight Bridge also sustained severe scouring and undermining of the abutment.
  • Emergency works have been completed to stabilise the abutment and temporary repairs to the embankment and road have been completed.
  • Road and bridge is now open.
  • Planning for a long-term stabilisation strategy is now complete and a contractor is engaged.
  • Construction works will commence in March 2023.
  • These works are not likely to cause too much traffic disruption.
  • The work is anticipated to take approximately 6-8 weeks to complete.
  • The work is being undertaken as essential public asset restoration through the provisions of the natural disaster guidelines.

Waukivory Road

Current situation: 

  • Waukivory Road sustained a severe landslip during the March 2021 Natural Disaster, with the failure removing the entire road.
  • The road is impassable and currently closed to traffic. 
  • Design to reinstate the damaged road is complete and a contractor has been engaged.
  • Construction is underway and making good progress.
  • Works are still and likely to take a further 3 months to complete.
  • This work is being undertaken as essential public asset restoration through the provisions of the natural disaster guidelines.

The Den Road, Mooral Creek

Current situation:

  • The Den Road sustained a series of serious landslips during the March 2021, February and July 2022 Natural Disasters. Since these floods a significant amount of work has occurred on the road in an effort to maintain access.
  • In July 2022, while construction works were underway, another significant landslip slip occurred further up the road on private property. As a result, although the original Construction works have now been completed, access along The Den road is now significantly limited.
  • Access along The Den Road for vehicles over 4T is not advisable.

Future situation: 

  • The new landslip is beyond of the Council’s Zone of Management so alternate solutions are currently being investigated by local land-owners.

Scone Road

Current situation: 

  • Scone Road sustained multiple landslips during the March 2021 flood event, both upslope and downslope failures. Following the floods, initial clean up works to clear the slips were undertaken to open the road.
  • The road is now OPEN
  • Works to undertake long term specialist repairs on the damaged sections of road is ongoing and will likely continue into Q3 2023.
  • With road works in progress, please drive with care and to the conditions.
  • The road is being monitored regularly, and it is important to remember that any significant rain event may cause more hazardous conditions or require further road closures.

Gloucester Tops Road - near Berrico

Current situation:

  • Gloucester Tops Road, about 1km northwest of Cockadilly Road intersection sustained some serious downslope failures as a result of the March 2021 flood.
  • The road is currently OPEN but restricted to a single lane in the landslip locations.
  • Procurement of a suitable contractors for this work is complete and permanent restoration works are underway.
  • With construction works underway there will likely be traffic restrictions and delays over that section until April/May 2023.

Bundook Road - near Doon Ayre

Current situation:

  • Bundook Road sustained several downslope failures only a few kilometres east and west of the intersection with Doon Ayre Road, as a result of the March 2021 and July 2022 floods and storms.
  • Repair of 5 major slips is complete
  • Repair of damaged pavement and stormwater drains just east of the rail crossing is currently being procured.
  • The Road is currently open but traffic is restricted to a single lane and traffic control in the area of the construction works. Please drive with care.

Nowendoc Road - 300m east of Stokes Road Intersection

Current situation:

  • Nowendoc Road has sustained a downslope failure three hundred metres east of the intersection with Stokes Road, as a result of the March 2021 flood.
  • The road is open with no traffic restrictions.
  • Council’s geotechnical engineer has been procured to provide advice on a long-term stabilisation solution. The works will need to be coordinated with ARTC.
  • Procurement of a suitable contractor for this work is complete and works are anticipated to commence in March/April 2023.

Future situation:

Future works will likely cause minor traffic disruption, with traffic restricted to a single lane during the works.

Machin Parade - Wingham

Current situation:

  • Machin Parade has sustained a downslope failure, as a result of the March 2021 flood.
  • The road is currently OPEN but a safety barrier has been installed and care should be taken when passing the affected area.
  • Council’s geotechnical engineer has advised the need for further stabilisation works is not likely, but a barrier is being considered. 

Future situation:

The site will be monitored for further deterioration over the next 12 months to confirm this determination.

Rawdon Vale Road

Current situation:

  • Rawdon Vale Road sustained a downslope failure as a result of the March 2021 flood.
  • The road is currently OPEN but in poor condition.
  • Design of a rectification solution is complete and contractor has been procured
  • Works on this slip are due to commence later in Q2 2023, dependent on contractor priority and materials availability.

Black Flat Lane

Current situation:

  • Black Flat Lane sustained significant damage in the March 2022 storms.
  • The road is currently CLOSED where the culvert 1.5km from Bulga Road has been completely washed away.
  • A rectification solution is currently being developed and once this is complete, funding approval and contractor procurement will be undertaken.
  • It is anticipated that works on this restoration will commence in 2023.

Thunderbolts Way

Current situation:

  • Thunderbolts Way sustained a series of significant upslope failures a few hundred metres of each other, about 5km south of Mares Run, as a result of the March 2022 storms.
  • Contractor procurement has been completed and stabilisation works commenced in January 2023.
  • The road is currently OPEN but restricted to a single lane in the area of the works. Drivers are warned to drive with caution as the roads are steep and slippery in the wet.
  • These works are likely to take 4-5 months to complete so completion is anticipated in May/June.

Moppy Road

Current situation:

  • Moppy Road has sustained a downslope failure 10km West of Rawdon Vale, as a result of the July 2022 flood.
  • The road is currently OPEN but restricted to a single lane.
  • Geotechnical investigations have been procured to enable development of a long-term rectification solution including stabilisation works to prevent regression affecting the road.
  • Contractor procurement is complete and works are due to commence in March/April 2023.
  • These works are complex and could be disrupted by wet weather.
  • Works are anticipated to be complete by June 2023.

Bowman Farm Road

Current situation:

  • Bowman Farm Road has sustained a downslope failure 5.5km north of Thunderbolts way intersection, as a result of the March flood.
  • Works to restore the embankment are now almost complete. The road is currently OPEN and unrestricted in the landslip location, however contractors are due to return to complete some minor works including fencing and services restoration in the coming weeks.

Comboyne Road

Current situation:

  • Comboyne Road sustained a downslope failure 9.2km up the road from the end of the sealed section, as a result of the July 2022 Natural Disaster.
  • The road is currently OPEN and unrestricted in the landslip location, however works are proposed to mitigate further regression and loss of the road.
  • Geotechnical investigations have been procured to enable development of a long-term rectification solution.
  • Contractor procurement is anticipated to take place in early 2023 and stabilisation works should commence in Q2 2023, pending contractor and materials availability.

Curricabark Road

Current situation:

  • Curricabark Road has sustained a series of downslope failures 7.5km -10km west of the intersection with Thunderbolts Way, as a result of the July 2022 Natural Disaster.
  • The road is currently OPEN and unrestricted in the landslip locations, however works are proposed to mitigate further regression and loss of the road.
  • Geotechnical investigations have been procured to enable development of a long-term rectification solution.
  • Contractor procurement is anticipated to occur in 2023 to target restoration by Mid 2023, pending contractor and materials availability.
