We're getting ready to deliver the first stage in the Forster Main Beach Masterplan, an upgrade of the facilities near the Forster Ocean Baths, thanks to a $200,000 funding allocation from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund and  an additional $250,000 from Council's Forster / Tuncurry Open Space fund.

We've completed a draft design for new facilities at the Ocean Baths, including upgrades to the large shaded barbecue area, public amenities / change rooms and outdoor shower area.

Now we're asking for community feedback on the design to ensure we've got the fit right, and it's in keeping with the masterplan.

As a result of public consultation during the masterplan consultation, it's been decided to relocate the proposed toilet block closer to the road and Second Head.

Change rooms will be provided within the new toilet block, rather than in a separate structure, and the existing change rooms will be removed.

The footprint of the existing change rooms will become the new barbecue and picnic area, and the existing barbecue area will be removed, which will be converted to a large grass area for people to enjoy.

The new barbecue area will provide a contemporary space with cooking facilities, picnic tables and an alfresco seating area. The new facility connects the open space to the natural surrounds, featuring mixed seating for different uses, modern furniture, and art screens using local Aboriginal designs.

View the plans here, and you can provide your feedback on the proposed upgrade until Sunday 28 April, after which plans will be finalised to allow for work to get underway.

When will construction of the new facilities start?

Without a detailed design, it is hard to determine an exact time frame for the construction. Once the designs are finalised, following the community engagement process, the exact time frames on the project will be established. Funding related to the project needs to be expended this year. It is hoped construction will start by August / September.

How long will construction take?

Depending on the final design and materials used, it is expected that construction will take between two to three months.

Will the Ocean Baths still be open during construction?

Access to the Ocean Baths will not be impacted during the construction. The works will be limited to the area where the existing amenities, change rooms and barbeque area are located, which will be fenced off during construction.

Will there be temporary toilets available during construction?

Yes, a temporary amenities block will be placed on site, while the new facilities are being built.

Will parking be impacted during construction?

There may be some short term impacts over 1 – 2 days during sewer connection works, but outside of that the carpark will not be affected, construction vehicles will be use on street parking or park within the fenced compound.

How is the project being funded?

The project is being funded through a mix of grant funding from the Stronger Country Communities fund, Section 94 contributions and Council’s General Revenue.

What will the storage area in the amenities block be used for?

This will be for the sole use of the Mudcrabs Swimming Club, who are a regular user group, to store equipment, such as line ropes.
