The final stage in the development of new planning controls to create a revitalised Hawks Nest business area, encourage a vibrant beach zone and protect local koalas is underway, with community consultation invited on the Draft Development Control Plan this month.

Since 2014, we've worked very closely with the Hawks Nest community and the Progress Association to develop a vision for future development of Hawks Nest.

We've listened when the community told us they want to revitalise the business area of Hawks Nest, and also to breathe new life into the village, to create a new, exciting buzz to their beautiful and unique part of the world that helps it stand apart from other north coast destinations.

The community endorsed the planning proposal in 2016 for two key areas in Hawks Nest. The intention is to refresh the existing business zone by allowing more residential development in the town centre and to create opportunity for tourism and boutique businesses close to the beach. At the same time, locals told us it was important to keep the beautiful and unspoilt bushland character of the town and protect the local koala population.

The NSW Government gazetted the new planning rules developed by Council and community in November 2017, and the zoning changes to the Great Lakes Local Environmental came into effect.

Now, MidCoast Council has developed a draft development control plan, which provides finer detail for people who wish to develop land within the new zones.

The draft development control plan ensures that the specific elements the community want in the business zone, the beach development zone and for the protection of koalas in Hawks Nest are included in individual development proposals into the future.

Special planning provisions in the development control plan will apply to each zone.

The draft plan will be on exhibition from Wednesday 8 August until Friday 7 September.

A drop-in session will be held on Wednesday 22 August at the Tea Gardens District Office, with staff available from 3pm until 6pm to provide information and answer questions on the draft plan.
