Queens Batton Relay Forster Tuncurry Event

The 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay will make its way through Forster Tuncurry on Friday 2 February 2018, day 39 of an epic 100-day journey around Australia. It arrives at its final destination on the Gold Coast on 4 April 2018 for the XXI Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony.

Our leg of the relay on 2 February is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for local residents to be part of Commonwealth Games tradition. Kicking off around 4.20pm in Wallis Street at Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club, batonbearers will work their way through Tuncurry, across the water by boat to Forster Marina, and finish up at Forster Ocean Baths around 5.40pm. Note: all times are indicative only and are likely to vary on the day.


The route:


4.24pm Commence Wallis Street Tuncurry, beside Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club
Left at Manning Street
Left into John Wright Park
4.38pm Prepare to travel across Wallis Lake by water vessel Forster Marina (launch 4.48pm)
5.09pm Left off Dolphin Drive into Oyster Parade
Right at Reserve Road
Right at Head Street
Left at Wharf Street
Right at Beach Street
Left at Wallis Street
Left at West Street
Left at Head Street
Right at Beach Street
Right at North Street
Left onto Forster Beach (stairs)
5.30pm Complete at Forster Ocean Baths

Did you know? The Queen’s Baton left Buckingham Palace on 13 March 2017, carrying a message from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her message will be read aloud by the Prince of Wales to declare the Commonwealth Games open on 4 April 2018.

Road closures and traffic delays:

Please expect major traffic delays and congestion in and around both Tuncurry and Forster between 4pm and 7pm on Friday 2 February. Signage, traffic control, barricades and police will be in place to assist with directing traffic around closed and partially closed roads, and to indicate where parking is removed.

If you are arranging appointments in Tuncurry and Forster on the day, please allow for additional travel time and possible issues with parking close by.

Road, park, marina and bridge closures that have been planned include:


  • Wallis Street (between Wharf Street and Parkes Street) - all day

  • John Wright Park - all day

  • Manning Street (between Tuncurry Street and Point Road) - only during Tuncurry baton bearer relay section.  Detour during this time will be Tuncurry Street, South Street, Bent Street, Taree Street and Point Road


  • Oyster Parade (west of Reserve Road including Dolphin Drive) - all day

  • John Holland carpark - all day

  • Road Closures for Forster baton bearer relay section (times vary between 4.30pm and 6pm and the following closures should be no longer than 30 to 45 minutes):

    • Reserve Road (between Oyster Parade and Head Street)

    • Head Street (between Tuncurry side of Forster/Tuncurry Bridge to MacIntosh Street)

    • Wharf Street (between Head and Beach Street)

    • Beach Street (between Head and Wallis Street)

    • Wallis Street (between Beach and West Street)

    • West Street (between Wallis and Head Street)

    • Beach Street (between Head and North Street)

    • North Street (between Beach and West Street)
