Nominations close Friday 2 August.

Background

The Manning River catchment and estuary is a significant natural asset vital to the local economy and the wellbeing of the community through provision of industries, potable water supply, recreation, social and cultural values.

The ecological health of the Manning River Estuary is under pressure as a result of both past and present land management practices and the Manning River Estuary Coastal Management Program (Manning River Estuary CMP) is being developed to provide strategic direction for future management of the Manning River Catchment and Estuary.

The Manning River Estuary CMP will ultimately protect and improve the ecological health of the Manning River estuary and in doing so support the social, cultural and economic values of the region.

It is a NSW Government requirement that Councils develop Coastal Management Programs and the Manning River ECMP is being developed in line with the Coastal Management Act 2016.

Stakeholder engagement is a requirement of the Coastal Management Act and the Manning River ECMP has a multidimensional engagement strategy.

The Manning River Coastal Management Program Reference Group is one of the ways that Council will seek input on the priority management actions to include in the Manning River ECMP.

Purpose

The Manning River Coastal Management Program Reference Group (referred to as The Manning River ECMP Reference Group) will provide strategic stakeholder input to the development of the Manning River Estuary Coastal Management Program. The Manning River ECMP will develop strategies for a healthy catchment and estuary that will support the social, economic, cultural and environmental values of its people.

The issues that the Manning River ECMP and therefore the Reference Group will focus on include:

• Agricultural and urban diffuse source runoff

• Degradation of riparian areas, existing native vegetation within the catchment and wetlands

• Floodplain drainage (acid runoff)

• Impacts of climate change on catchment and estuary health.
