Nestled in the foothills of Barrington Tops, Copeland Tops State Conservation Area contains the most accessible tract of rare dry rainforest in the Gloucester district plus a large number of historical relics. The rainforest area is simply gorgeous and to learn more about the area’s mining heritage, join one of the guided tours of the Mountain Maid gold mine.

You’ll stroll along old logging tracks beneath a canopy of towering trees on one of the park’s scenic walking trails. The rugged wilderness was rich in Red Cedar trees (known as red gold) and was highly sought after by Australia’s European settlers. This attracted timber-getters as early explorers who came to log the mountains and who found the first specks of real gold in 1875 along Back Creek. The diggings commenced shortly after and the area became known as Copeland, after the Minister for Lands Henry Copeland. Although conditions would have been tough back then in this rugged and remote area, you’ll discover that it’s a beautiful place to have worked in.
